A Must-Read for any La Jollan, and more
This is a beautiful book. It is exquisitely written and the photos are breathtaking. Andujar really did her homework and explains the history of some of La Jolla's landmarks, from schools and hotels to the famous La Jolla Cove. I lived in "the Jewel" for many years, but never understood its glory until I read this book.

Letters of St. Therese of Lisieux, Vol. II
Published in Paperback by Ics Pubns (October, 1988)
Authors: John Clarke, John Sullivan, and Thberaese
Average review score:

a wealth of authentic Therese: milieu, maturing, and mission
This authoritative translation of the second volume of the critical edition of the letters of St. Therese and those written to her is an unprecedented breakthrough in the field, and a delight for her new and old friends. For the first time in English, one can read Therese's letters from the time of her final vows in September 1890 until her death in 1897. Readers can accompany her through the most hidden years of her Carmelite life, the election of her sister as prioress ("Mother! ah! how sweet it is for your child to give you this name!"), the death of her father ("Papa's death does not seem like a death to me, but like a real life . . ."), her letters to her missionary brothers, Adolphe Roulland and Maurice Belliere ("Ah! Brother, let me tell you: the good God is reserving for your soul very sweet surprises."), her letters to her sisters Marie ("what pleases God in my little soul . . . is that He sees me loving my littleness, my poverty, the blind hope I have in His mercy"), Leonie and Celine ("Yes, it is enough if we humble ourselves and bear with our imperfections; that is real sanctity,"), and her growing sense of mission ("I would like to save souls and forget myself for them; I would like to save them even after my death."

The letters written to Therese deepen the reader's knowledge of her milieu and the persons who surrounded her in the Lisieux Carmel. The notes are a marvel of depth and precision, enabling the reader to see Therese's words in the context of her real life. An index to both volumes of Therese's letters is a great enhancement. I cannot recommend the book highly enough.

Licensed to Rape?
Published in Paperback by Learning Publications (04 January, 1999)
Author: John Sullivan

How a jury member recreates the trauma of the trial!
I read Licensed to Rape? upon the recommendation of a friend. What a compelling and chilling story! A woman brings rape charges against her physician and suffers the inevitable trauma necessary to bring her case to trial. I was impressed with the author's ability to recreate the individual personalities so vividly. Since the author was a member of the jury I felt every minute of the proceedings to be intensely accurate. The jury room descriptions especially were eye opening. I would highly recommmend this book as a lesson in how the legal process works as well as how one person faced a life altering challenge.

Limitations of Science

Author: J.W. Sullivan
Average review score:

A comprehensive, brief and clear survey of modern science.

The Limitations of Science - J.W.N.Sullivan

Written over six decades ago, when modern physics was still in its nascent state, this book gives the best ever survey of the developments in science, which both fascinates and enthralls the mind of an intelligent layman, and, can truly be considered a classic piece.

Opening with a discourse on Science and its nature, and leading upto various disciplines therein, the author captures the reader's attention and holds it ransom till the end, with the reader becoming a willing hostage, eager to be enamoured by the interconnections and examples drawn from everyday experiences. Tracing the history of how science came about as a separate study from philosophy, the author spans such a broad spectrum as our expanding Universe to the subatomic structure of Matter, Relativity and Riemann geometry, Theory of Origin of Species and Natural Selection, Evolution of Intelligence and Behaviourism, and ends with an optimistic note towards a Unified Science that can explain the nature of mind, life, and matter as known in their present form.

Citing various examples to support his arguments and lead the reader towards established conclusions, the author quotes from such distinguished savants as Plato, Lavoisier, Newton, Darwin, Bragg, Minkowski, Freud, Pavlov and Huxley, among others, whose incredible contributions have made understanding of our Universe as engaging, complex and gratifying as we find it today. For all you non-scientists out there who feel like an outsider, denied membership to the Secret Society of High-Brows, this book will fill you with comprehensive information without insignificant details that bog you down; and as for those scientists out there who feel smug and confident about their knowledge, the scope and power of this book, and the author's clear, crisp presentation will give you a fresh perspective and leave you feeling like a new-born soaking up fresh experiences each minute.

The Long, Long Love (Voices of the South)
Published in Paperback by Louisiana State University Press (October, 1999)
Author: Walter Sullivan
Average review score:

touching and hilarious
Though it deals with serious subject matter, this book is absolutely hilarious. The characters are well-drawn, believable, and deal with difficult situations. This one is a page-turner; the reader won't want to put it down until this entire story is unfolded. The plot takes turns you won't suspect until they happen, and it would be sinful to give them away to you now! Even if you don't normally read books in this genre, I guarantee you'll enjoy every word.
